Hot Lunch by Rex Ogle

Free LunchFree Lunch by Rex Ogle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow this book is a tough but necessary read as Rex tells us his life during one semester in middle school. Too many kids are living under horrific conditions; abusive parents, racism, poverty, and feelings of loss, abandonment and anger as they and Rex try to live each day in a hell that is overwhelming. Teachers, guidance counselors, teens and middle school kids MUST read this book. It is honest and sad and gripping! Highly recommended!

Guts by Raina Telgemeier

GutsGuts by Raina Telgemeier
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Raina T is one of my favorite middle school graphic novel authors! I enjoy all of books whether fiction or nonfiction. She is funny, brings authenticity to her characters, but also knows how to introduce to her young readers troubles (like tummy troubles, friendship dilemmas, bullying, etc) through her graphic novel format, which is truly inspiring! A must read for all- parents, kids, guidance counselors, school nurses)!

Hillbilly Elegy: a Memoir of a family and culture in Crisis) by J.D. Vance

Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in CrisisHillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh did I love this book; JD Vance's writing style about the hillbilly predicament (poor white Americans) was funny, sad, filled with honesty, facts, and the horror that was JD Vance's life (and other middle class Americans). Thank god for his grandparents, especially his Mamaw---yet she was one scary lady too. Highly recommended!
