A Light in the Flame (Flesh and Fire, #2) by Jennifer L Armentrout

A Light in the Flame (Flesh and Fire, #2)A Light in the Flame by Jennifer L. Armentrout
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This 2nd in the Flesh and Fire series was scorching hot! I fell in love with Nyktos & Sera AGAIN as they navigate their friendship, their passion (Nyktos can't love) and their staunch support of each other and their kingdom(s) as this fantasy unfolds. As always, the characters, the plot, and the setting had me turning those pages, I can't wait for the 3rd book! Highly recommended!

Pretty Little Lion (Third Shift #2) by Suleikha Snyder

Pretty Little Lion (Third Shift #2)Pretty Little Lion by Suleikha Snyder
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Book 2 in the Third Shift series brings one of the owners, Elijah (lion shapeshifter) trying to infiltrate bad guy from Book 1, Mirko and his organization. The way Third Shift finds a way in is through his girlfriend, Meghna---but she is not at all what Elijah thinks and as they find out the hard way (murder) Meghna and Elijah form a very uneasy alliance (why? because they care about one another) and so the cat and mouse game begins---I loved this book as much as the first but oh boy what an ending----I need another book in this series, please!

Big Bad Wolf (Third Shift #1) by Suleikha Snyder

Big Bad Wolf (Third Shift #1)Big Bad Wolf by Suleikha Snyder
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this new series featuring shapeshifters in a new world since 2016 where Third Shift is run by 2 supernatural beings but also employ humans to help rid the world of bad guys (human and supernatural). Joe Peluso's story is awesome---and when he is hunted for the justice he took in his dead foster brother's name---the action takes off! His lawyer is a human but also holds a degree in psychology and there is instant attraction between Joe and Neha. How they get together and escape to try to find answers, keep from dying, and a lot of romance in between kept me turning the pages! I loved the plot, so many of the characters, and the author's world she built around Joe and Neha. Can't wait to read Book 2 in this series!

My Contrary Mary (Mary #1) by Cynthia Hand

My Contrary Mary (Mary, #1)My Contrary Mary by Cynthia Hand
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Audio for the advance reader copy, My Contrary Mary by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, & Jodi Meadows in exchange for an honest review. I have listened to and loved the 3 previous audiobooks from Hand’s Jane series. When I saw the NetGalley email about My Contrary Mary, I jumped on to listen to this new series. But I did not see that this book was a voice galley with a synthetic voice until I tuned in to listen. I definitely would not recommend this way to listen to the book! The pacing was off, there was no tone and inflection, and was not a great way to listen to this book.
That said, I am going to ignore all the ways to review this book as an audio book and will just review the story which was so awesome! Hand, Ashton & Meadows really know how to re-write interesting history, making it funny yet true to history with a few differences. The plot line continues from previous books using the exciting, humorous, and fantastical Ethyans who shapeshift from human to animal. Also ingenious is the is the authors’ (as narrators) comments throughout the book. The many puns and references to modern day phrases and songs were perfect and added so much to my enjoyment of the book, the characters, and their lives in history. Mary Queen of Scots was sent at a very young age to live in France and always knew she was to marry her childhood friend, Francis, Dauphin of France. With villainy and much conspiracy, both Mary and Francis have many plotting against them as rulers. Luckily Mary has her ladies in waiting (all shapeshifters) who try to protect her, and what a job it is! Luckily Mary has Ari and her father who use potions and can see into the future or foretell danger. The drama and excitement in this first of another series by Hand will surely turn history on its head and have teens totally enjoying and understanding the history of royals. Highly recommended!

Haven by Mary Lindsey

HavenHaven by Mary Lindsey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing and Entangled Teen for the ARC, Haven by Mary Lindsey in exchange for an honest review. I could not put this book down! I immediately loved Rain; he was a tough teen with a tenacious heart of gold for anyone he cared about. After living in shelters most of his life due to his mom’s drug addiction, Rain and best friend, Moth, use their fists to handle most problems. When his mother dies, an aunt he did not even know existed, brings him to the small town of New Wurzburg and his life is turned upside down. I was sucked into Rain’s intense feelings for Freddie, a strong girl who seems to be from the wrong side of the tracks. For fans of Maggie Stiefvater fantasy series, this book will hook you, drag you into a world of shape shifting, bullies, evil, lies, and secrets. As Rain learns more about Freddie, her father’s death, and her hidden world, he becomes such a hero in my book. He is all in when it comes to protecting those he loves- Rain is willing to die to help Freddie and she fights his offers to help (she is so afraid he will be killed). I loved both Rain and Freddie’s intensity, their romance was sizzling, and their combined skills made this a super thrilling paranormal read. Highly recommended!

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

NimonaNimona by Noelle Stevenson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Boy did I enjoy this delightfully evil strong female protagonist, Nimona! While her boss is supposedly an evil villain, Nimona jumps right into fights as a shapeshifter. Ballister Blackheart easily believes Nimona has come to help him as an intern and she quickly shows him her shape shifting, her ability to heal VERY quickly, and we see how he begins to care for her while also trying to work against the Institute using rules and fair play as excuses to stop Nimona from wreaking havoc and death. One moment, Nimona is beguiling to Ballister, the next she is cunning, willful and willing to do whatever it takes to take down the enemy-even if others (innocent) get in the way. As the stakes continue to rise from the mystery of jade root deaths, the clash of science/technology, who will be the last standing? Appearances are definitely deceiving in this winner of a graphic novel--Nimona is awesomely wicked, sure of herself, and a survivor. Highly recommended!
