A Devil in the ValleyA Devil in the Valley by Paul Holes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

this Audible Original Podcast was so good; Narrated by: Jim Clemente & Paul Holes it was thoroughly researched and as Paul Holes goes about trying to tie serial Killer, Phillip Hughes, to one murder, then two, and each time solving cold cases. I loved this podcast and will definitely listen to others Paul Holes is involved with.

The Voice Inside (Frost Eaton, #2) by Brian Freeman

The Voice Inside (Frost Easton, #2)The Voice Inside by Brian Freeman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This 2nd book in the Frost Easton series was riveting; the reader learns more about the murder of his sister Katie since the murderer is let out of prison because Frost's boss planted evidence. Now it is a race against time to get this killer back in jail before he murders again. Read this in 1 day too because I could not put it down!!! How the women were targeted, how Katie was murdered and the sick brain of the murderer kept this thriller in my hands! A must read, now I am on to the final book in this must read series!

Throwaway Girls by Andrea Contos

Throwaway GirlsThrowaway Girls by Andrea Contos
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Thank you to NetGalley, #BookJunkies, @Andrea_Contos, Kids Can Press and KCP Loft for the advance reader copy of Throwaway Girls by debut author, Andrea Contos, in exchange for an honest review. I could not put this YA mystery down! Caroline is a forthright yet conflicted narrator who steadfastly investigates when her best friend, Madison, suddenly disappears. Andrea Contos’ plot and characterizations will have teens guessing as this mystery deepens to involve more than one girl. Caroline is believable as she delves full force into finding out what happened to Madison. But she also gains problems that cause her to push away friends, Jake and Aubrey, who only want to help her. I understood yet I did not understand many of Caroline’s decisions. I was also confused many times with the appearance of characters, Livie and Willa. And the parents were also off the charts unsupportive, tough, and mean spirited. As Caroline struggles with her reality, she constantly keeps her goal in mind, three months to graduate, and get out. But as the plot thickens, the thrill quickens. What will happen to Caroline, Madison, Willa and the others? This is a riveting book dealing with family problems, friendship, LGBT issues, and social classes. A must-read!

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

My Sister, the Serial KillerMy Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really liked this book but disagreed with the ending...that said Korede is a strong but conflicted character with a sister, Ayoola, who uses her beauty and personality to fool everyone. Even Korede can't believe the lies her sister tells about her...but on to other parts of the book...I could not put down this slim book because I like to read books about serial killers. But that said I feel the author took Korede's strength of character and used it against her. The reader does not find out far into the book about their family dysfunction, maniacal father with his beatings and perverse thoughts on marriage, family and what people think about him. As Korede has no friends, she confides in a comatose patient in her hospital all that bothers her about her sister, her killings, and her own part in these. She is in love with Tade who has no idea she even exists, until her sister, the serial killer, comes into the hospital and he falls hard for her. What to do, tell Tade about Ayoola or keep silent? You read the book. I just feel Korede standing by her sister is a HUGE mistake! It is taking family love and caring for your sister no matter what too far.

Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor

Akata Witch (Akata Witch, #1)Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Yetide Badaki did a stellar job of narrating this fascinating audiobook about young teens in Nigeria who have mystical powers and must help find who is maiming and mutilating and killing young children. Author Okorafor uses mythology, magic, fantasy, to weave a masterful mystery. Sunny, and her three friends Orlu, Chichi and Sasha made a great team as they become Leopard People and bond over juju, sports, and chittim. I can't wait to read Akata Warrior and jump right back into this world!

A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis

A Madness So DiscreetA Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Brittany Pressley's narration of Grace and the doctor were perfect; McGinnis' story of insane asylums during the early 1900s, the injustices perpetrated against patients and just victims of society as a whole and the work Grace performs trying to catch a serial killer had me riveted. The plot was thick with mystery and the horrors of life in the Ohio asylum and I appreciated the change to the Boston asylum where the patients were treated as humanely as possible. Grace's friends were real and very supportive of her; it was Grace who really had to figure out who she was and what she wanted in life. A great psychological thriller, McGinnis is one of my new favorite authors!
