Woner Twins Vol. 2: The Fall and Rise of the Wonder Twins by Mark Russell and Stephen Byrne

Wonder Twins Vol. 2: The Fall and Rise of the Wonder TwinsWonder Twins Vol. 2: The Fall and Rise of the Wonder Twins by Mark Russell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really liked this 2nd Wonder Twins comic; Jayna and Zan are heroes for their part in taking down the League of Annoyance but Jayna's friend is behind bars and wants nothing to do with her. But this is a swift moving and exciting volume as the twins strike out on their own to help their friends and the world!

Nubia Real One by L.L. McKinney ill by Robyn Smith

Nubia: Real OneNubia: Real One by L.L. McKinney
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Nubia's life has certainly been different and most certainly challenging when her mothers keep telling her to keep her head down so she doesn't call attention to herself and stay safe. Nubia has been different since she was a child and what the author and illustrator do is give the reader a kick ass story about family, friendship, helping others, racism, and finding out who you are. I loved Nubia, her friends, and family!

Archenemies (Renegades #2) by Marissa Meyer

Archenemies (Renegades, #2)Archenemies by Marissa Meyer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Still not a fan of this series, but I will stick with it. I really like Adrian who is naturally good---as the Sentinel, he goes against the Renegade code to help others. Nova really irritates me- I guess I should chalk up her personality to never having the things she should have, believing the Renegades should have been there to help her family, and working as a double agent to bring the Anarchists back into power. Their romance would have been so much more normal if Nova wasn't so combative, prickly, and torn. So here's hoping for a good resolution to this Renegades series with the final book.

Ms. Marvel Vol. 5 Super Famous by G. Willow Wilson

Ms. Marvel, Vol. 5: Super FamousMs. Marvel, Vol. 5: Super Famous by G. Willow Wilson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The world of Jersey City and Kamala's life has just gotten even more hectic---who is taking over their town to redevelop it and while they are at it---overtaking the people in the community. Bruno is still Kamala's best friend but since she spurned his love because she is just too busy --- he has moved on and I for one like Mike, his girlfriend! Her Brother has fallen in love and is getting married. Kamala is too busy in life, school, family, etc.---when she recruits Bruno to make "more" Kamala's---it backfires. What will happen to Ms Marvel, Kamala and keeping friends but also saving the world. I loved the addition of the superheroes, I just hope Kamala (Ms Marvel) asks for their help and does not try to do it alone!

Ms. Marvel Vol. 4 Last Days by G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona

Ms. Marvel, Vol. 4: Last DaysMs. Marvel, Vol. 4: Last Days by G. Willow Wilson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love this comic book series, Last Days is a bit more edgy than the first 3 because Kamala really believes it is the end of the world, the superheroes will not be able to overthrow Lineage, and her brother has been kidnapped and a gas has given him unnatural powers. Love this series!!!

Ms. Marvel, Vol. 3: CrushedMs. Marvel, Vol. 3: Crushed by G. Willow Wilson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Book 3 was a rousing read and visual treat; Kamala Kahn still delights as she fights for right and then she falls for a nice Indian boy (she knew as a child) and they both love World of Battlecraft!!! But be careful what you wish for...because there is a faction of the inhumans who want evil; a ripping good read!

Villain (Gone #8 Monster #2) by Michael Grant

Villain (Gone Book 8)Villain by Michael Grant
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh do I LOVE this series and Villain did not disappoint! I devoured this riveting read in 2 days, with new characters (Dillon Poe, Francis Specter, DiMarco) and old characters I love - Shade, Dekka, Cruz, Malik, Sam Temple, Astrid, Armo and characters I hate - Drake, Peaks. As Malik suffers excruciating pain from burns, he ingests" the rock" and when he morphs he is able to give unbelievable pain to others. Dillon Poe is a horror, his power AFTER EATING THE ROCK- when he speaks all must do what he tells them and oh is Dillon awful. As things spiral out of control; Shade, Cruz and Malik want to work with Dekka to HELP turn the public tide of hatred and horror to their favor as superheroes. The government is mostly evil, working against everyone (DiMarco) and intent on wiping out the superheroes and supervillains. This book was action packed; filled with horror, battles, and the world in the clenches of crazy characters intent on evil, murder, and mayhem. But through it all I rooted for the superheroes and can't wait to see what Francis Specter does in future books! A tremendous wild read!

Renegades by Marissa Meyer

Renegades (Renegades, #1)Renegades by Marissa Meyer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I felt there was too much description and not enough action ( & I so loved the Lunar Chronicles) too little known about many characters and too much introspection from Nova and not enough thoughts, words, deeds from Adrian (Ruby, Oscar) and the other Renegades. With that ending though I am definitely going to read the 2nd one.

Sovereign (Dreadnought #2) by April Daniels

Sovereign (Nemesis, #2)Sovereign by April Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I listened to/read this audiobook for the August twitter chat to be held Sept 6 at 8PM EST with #yearofYA, come join us, in so many ways this awesome audiobook featured many main characters -Dreadnught (Danny), Calamity (Sara), and evil villain Graywytch (she had a hidden agenda to overthrow men therefore taking insanity to wack level being an empowered female). Narrator Natasha Soudek was really super with the many voices/characters resulted in an awesome performance I thoroughly enjoyed!!! As Danny works really hard to be the best superhero, she is stretched thin and needs help. Graywytch continues to be evil to Danny because he is a boy but she goes totally off the rails with her villainy and it was tough to listen to Danny as Graywytch tortured her. I loved the addition of new characters, especially Charlie (loved narrator's voice for him) In the end, I liked the world building, how Danny's close friends always had her back and can't wait for the 3rs book!.

I love Kamala, her insecurities (her parents), her righteousness (helping others) and her evolution as Ms Marvel!!! Read it now, you will love the story, illustrations everything!

Black Hammer (Vol. 1 Secret Origins) by Jeff Lemire Dean Ormston Dave Steweart

Black Hammer, Vol. 1: Secret OriginsBlack Hammer, Vol. 1: Secret Origins by Jeff Lemire
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read this 2nd award winner graphic novel by Jeff Lemire as part of the 2018 HUB Reading Challenge. This is another great graphic novel by Jeff Lemire; I loved the illustrations of the super heroes as heroes and also their bodies as they impersonate normal humans in a small town… where they have been hiding out for the last 10 years since the downfall of Spiral City. This is the beginning of a series and I can't wait to get to Vol. 2 The Event. I loved all the characters, Abraham Slam, Golden Gail, Colonel Weird, Madame Dragonfly, and Barbalien and enjoyed the histories/biographies of each provided by Lemire at the end. An awesome read!

Dreadnought (Nemesis #1) by April Daniels

Dreadnought (Nemesis, #1)Dreadnought by April Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read and loved this awesome thriller for the 2018 HUB Reading Challenge and if you like superheroes and villains you will love Danny's drama. Danny has always wanted to be a girl but was born and raised a boy yet he secretly paints his toenails, tries on dresses, etc. As he hides in a side street there is an explosion and this famous superhero, Dreadnought, falls from the sky and before he dies he passes his mantle to Danny. What results is life changing and mind blowing- Danny is now a girl with Dreadnought's powers. What's a girl to do- her family is horrified and wants their son back and there is evil lurking in New Port...for a rip roaring read, you will love this first book in the series and I can't wait to read #2 Sovereign!

Monster by Michael Grant

Monster (Gone, #7)Monster by Michael Grant
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read and loved the Gone series in 2008 when it was published and gobbled all the books in this series up, my students loved this series too! Now Grant is back with a new series but tied to the FAYZ after the dome is broken and the horror that was Gaia is now contained in the rock that was TAKEN from inside the mountain and as it hurtles through the sky, where it breaks up and a whole new horror of deadly powers is unleashed (alien rock/virus is ingested!!!) in teens and adults (Shade Darby, Armo, Justin, Vincent, Drake and Peaks) but I was so glad to see Dekka return (relived her nightmares, memories of those kids at Perdido Beach, and her last 4 years as no one). I also loved Malik's steadfast love and support (even when he did not support Shade) of crazy Shade Darby and her friend, Cruz. Can't wait for Villain which will be out last quarter 2018!!!

Plutona by Jeff Lemire, Emi Lenox, Jordie Bellaire

Plutona #1Plutona #1 by Jeff Lemire
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I read this graphic novel as part of the 2017 HUB Reading Challenge & graphic novel winner. I loved the art work by Emi Lenox but the story of teens finding a superhero dead in the woods and undecided on what to do about it - did not bring out the best in this group. Mei has a younger brother and is selfish (to her bestie), mean (to her brother), and drops everything for a loser guy. Loser guy, Ray, comes from a broken home with alcoholic dad but Ray is not nice to anyone, especially Teddy and Diane. Teddy is into superheroes (capespotting) and is involved in a club that tracks superhero sightings. As they walk home from school they discover Superhero Plutona (supposedly dead) in the forest. As they wrestle with how to handle the situation (they do not agree at all) the reader also sees Plutona the Superhero balance her day job as Mom working double shifts. What will these kids do to help Plutona and each other?

I read this graphic novel as part of the Hub Challenge; Doreen Green is her name but she is superhero, Squirrel Girl, and she works with her pet squirrel, Tippy Toe, to keep the world safe. As she begins college, Doreen/Squirrel Girl has a roommate who is spunky and also has a cat, Mew that she loves. Squirrel Girl is very determined to rid the world of Kraven the Hunter and Galactus and with a little help from her squirrel friends, she will win!
